Masterclass: Combatting online harassment
NOTE: Due to space limitations and specific room setup for this session, we had to limit the number of participants. Pre-registration for this session is required. To check availability, please contact the moderator at jluque@ipi.media.
This session will be held in person only (not available online)!

Online harassment is eating away at journalism, and especially damaging the reputation of women journalists. This special masterclass will power you to develop best practices with tools that work, both in your journalism and in your company. The masterclass with experts will cover 3 areas of discussion:

Putting systems in place - An overview from prevention to recovery
  • Establishing structures and systems both at the state level and within newsrooms; creating a culture of safety that encourages journalists to report online abuse to authorities, platforms and their own editors; avoiding stigmatization and victimization; and providing support to targets are all essential to preventing the emotional and professional toll on journalists as well as self-censorship.
Audience moderation - Nurturing a community
  • News organizations operating online have been developing sophisticated strategies and mechanisms to ensure a constant exchange with their audiences. This principle is particularly true in the context of preventing and countering attacks on journalists, which can and do occur through the comment sections of news organizations’ websites, in addition to harassment that takes place on social media platforms.
Investigating online harassment | Case study: The murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia
  • One of the measures to counter smear campaigns is applying your journalistic skills to investigate coordinated attempts to discredit your work and create an atmosphere where trolls feel entitled to intimidate you. We will present the investigation that The Shift carried out in Malta into the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, looking at how secret Facebook groups worked to dehumanise and isolate her. The research became an important evidence into the landmark Public Inquiry into Daphne’s murder finding that “the State has to shoulder responsibility for the assassination […]”

Organized with the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
