Freelance Journalist/President IAWRT
Violet Gonda is an award-winning Zimbabwean broadcast journalist. For almost two decades she has helped to develop and implement communications campaigns, which included setting up privately owned start-up satellite radio and television stations in Zimbabwe, broadcasting from London, USA and South Africa.
In 2002, Violet became one of six co-founders of SW Radio Africa, which made bold moves to provide alternative coverage of Zimbabwe from London. Shortly thereafter, she was banned by the government from returning to Zimbabwe. Over the years, she has found alternative ways to circumvent state censorship in Zimbabwe while reporting from forced exile - by ways of informing the public through daily news bulletins via satellite broadcasts, including working for the Washington DC-based Voice of America and worked with a small group to launch 1st TV from South Africa. This was a highly successful short-term free-to-air television station that sought to bring accurate news and information to Zimbabweans in the 2013 election period. After almost 20 years in exile, Violet briefly returned to Zimbabwe in 2018 to host live public debates focusing on the country’s historic elections, when President Robert Mugabe was removed in a coup. She is unable to go back to Zimbabwe again, and is currently working on her new own online platform as a freelance journalists and expanding her flagship programme - ‘Hot Seat with Violet Gonda' - to tackle critical issues not only in Zimbabwe but the African continent at large using social media platforms.
She is also the President of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television. IAWRT is a global organization with a mission to strengthen initiatives towards ensuring women’s views and values are integral part of media programming and to advance the impact of women in media. It has more that 400 journalists from over 50 countries.
